If one image sums up Sri Lanka, it’s probably this: a blue train winding slowly through green tea hills, doors open, strangers waving at each other from the windows.
The ride really is that good. It’s also long, popular and a little unpredictable. This guide will help you enjoy it without surprises.
How long does the Kandy to Ella train take?
Plan for a full day. Most guides quote between 6 and 8 hours, and delays can make it longer. Don’t plan anything important for the rest of the day, and treat the train as the main event of your day.
Usually there are a couple of departures from Kandy each day, one in the morning and one around late morning. Timetables change from time to time, so always check the latest schedule before you book.
Which class should you book?
-
First class (observation car): air-conditioned, with big windows. The windows are sealed, so it feels less atmospheric and fewer photos are possible.
-
Second class (reserved): the best choice for most travellers. You get an assigned seat, open windows and room to lean out and enjoy the view. Prices are modest, usually under a few US dollars per person.
-
Third class: the cheapest and the most local. Unreserved tickets don’t guarantee a seat, and you may end up standing.
Which side should you sit on?
Leaving Kandy, the right-hand side usually has the better valley views, especially on the way up towards Nuwara Eliya. On the return journey from Ella, the left side has the better views near the Nine Arches Bridge.
Take photos in the first half of the day, when the light is best and the mist is lifting off the hills.
How to book your seats
Reserved seats open about 30 days before travel and can sell out quickly, especially from December to March. You can try to buy an unreserved ticket at the station on the day, but there’s no guarantee of a seat, so arrive early.
This is the part that many travellers find stressful. If you book with us, we reserve your seats in advance and plan the rest of your day around the train. [Confirm that this is a service you provide.]
What to pack for the train
-
Water and snacks.
-
A light jacket, because the hill country gets cooler.
-
A fully charged phone and a power bank.
-
A small bag, as luggage space is limited.
-
A relaxed mindset, because delays happen and they’re part of the story.
Our honest take
Not every minute is postcard-perfect. Some stretches are crowded or hot. But then you reach a tea hillside with a cup of chai in your hand, and suddenly the whole day makes sense.
Frequently asked questions
Can I take the train in the rainy season?
Yes, trains run all year. The hills are very green in the wetter months, but views can be misty, so carry a rain jacket.
Is it better to sit by the door?
Doorway spots give amazing photos, but safety comes first. Stay careful, hold on, and never lean out near stations or tunnels.
Should I book the train myself or through a travel designer?
You can do either. If you’d like to avoid sold-out seats and plan transfers around your train, we’re happy to handle the booking.
What’s the best stop after Ella?
Many travellers continue to Yala for a safari or head to the south coast for beach days. We can plan the route to suit your dates.
